A Bit About Me

In the fall of 2010, I took a Marine Biology class with Dr. Sean Grace at Southern Connecticut State University. The craziest thing happened, I fell in love with seaweed.  I traveled the Connecticut shoreline and beyond collecting seaweed specimens for my final project, the herbarium.

Marine biology class ended, and a new semester began.  One day I was in invertebrate zoology class examining protozoans with a microscope.  There were dinoflagellates, euglena, volvox and many more I cannot recall.  My cell phone had too many missed calls during that class, but I was so distracted that I didn’t notice.  After, I was alone walking to my car when my phone rang. It was my brother Jason and he told me John was dead. John was his twin brother and John was my little brother, and he was gone.  I could not comprehend this.  I said no, he is not, and I hung up.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.”   Ernest Hemingway

I have always loved being at the ocean, now it has become my place of meditation, of spirituality, of peace and tranquility.  A place that makes sense when everything else in life makes no sense.  I continue to collect and press seaweed and make art with it, and my love affair with seaweed continues to grow.
